June Series
Choose Saturdays, 10am – 12:30pm -OR- Sundays, 1 – 3:30pm
Join us this June and become a master of electricity and circuitry in our NEW summer workshop series. You’ll start by exploring series and parallel circuits with playdough and before long you’ll be sewing conductive creations, wiring dancing critters to slide and shake and constructing illuminating greeting cards. Each session builds on the previous knowledge learned to make it a truly memorable learning experience. Learn more about the summer workshop series here.

Week 1

June 3 & 4 · Intro to Circuitry: What makes a simple, complex or parallel circuit and how can you complete one using play-dough? Let us show you in this exciting workshop that allows students to explore the properties of circuits using unconventional materials.

Week 2

June 10 & 11 · Intro to Soldering: Build off your newly developed circuitry skills and take them to a new level. Use new materials to create a critter that is entirely your own. Teach your critter to dance and doodle, slide and shake in a way that’s all your own. Finish the workshop by creating a badge that blinks and flashes thanks to your new soldering skills.

Week 3

June 17 & 18 · Wearable Circuits: Begin this workshop by using special building blocks that contain inputs and outputs like motors, lights, batteries and buzzers and make them work together as part of a system you design. Then channel your inner seamstress to craft a conductive creation with LEDs and conductive thread that is sure to brighten any room.

Week 4

June 24 & 25 · Designing with Circuits: In this final workshop, put your new skills to the test as you learn more about how different colors of light interact as you experiment with light and shadows. Complete the series by combining your knowledge of circuitry and creativity to create a greeting card that will truly shine.

Workshops Participants Receive:

  • Supervised 2.5 hour workshop each week
  • Independent learning - Participants are dropped off and picked up at Visitor Service
  • Build new friendships in a camp-like, workshop format
  • In-depth knowledge and become a master in circuitry or engineering helping to preventing summer brain drain
  • Admission for the participants into the science center
  • Take-home activities and projects completed in the workshop

True: The speed of light is sometimes referred to as the “cosmic speed limit”. Light travels in a vacuum at 186,282.4 miles per second or 299,792,458 meters/second. For simplicity, it is often said that these numbers are 186,000 miles per second, and 3.00 x 10^8 meters per second.
